End of Life Care & Euthanasia in Prescott, AZ
Compassionate quality-of-life support and dignified end-of-life services.
Call (928) 771-1340End-of-life care covers the support we offer in the final chapter of a pet's life: quality-of-life evaluations, hospice and pain control, help knowing when the time has come, and a gentle, dignified euthanasia process when that is the right next step. Our goal is for every family to leave with the sense that they did right by their pet at every stage.
Quality-of-life support and hospice care
Quality of life in pets is the balance of comfort, function, and the things that bring an individual pet joy. We use a structured framework (often the HHHHHMM scale: Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, More good days than bad) to give families an honest, measurable read on how their pet is doing. Hospice care can extend good days through pain management, anti-nausea medication, appetite support, mobility aids, subcutaneous fluids at home, and environmental adjustments. We can teach you to give SQ fluids and medications at home, and we will be in regular contact through this period.
Knowing when it is time
There is rarely a single dramatic moment that tells you. Most often it is a gradual shift: the bad days outnumber the good, your pet is no longer doing the things that made them themselves, or pain is no longer responsive to medication. Some families know in their gut and want confirmation. Others want a structured assessment. Both are valid. We will sit with you through the conversation and give you our honest read. There is no fee for a quality-of-life consult.
What to expect during a euthanasia visit
We schedule euthanasia appointments for quiet times of day and use a private comfort room (not an exam room) where you and your family can take all the time you need. Friends, children, and other family pets are welcome. The process is in two stages:
- A sedative injection that puts your pet into a deep, peaceful sleep within a few minutes. There is usually no awareness of anything that follows.
- The final injection, which stops the heart gently and quickly while your pet is already deeply asleep.
You can be with your pet through both stages, or step out at any point. There is no wrong choice. Some owners prefer to say their goodbye after the sedation when their pet is calm and unaware. Others stay through the entire process. Our team's only goal is that your pet is peaceful and that you have whatever space you need.
Aftercare options
We work with a respectful local pet aftercare provider that offers private and communal cremation. Private cremation returns your pet's individual ashes to you in a wooden urn (other options are available at the family's request). Communal cremation does not return ashes. We can also coordinate paw prints, fur clippings, and clay paw impressions as keepsakes. Home burial is legal in Yavapai County in most circumstances. We will walk through every option with you and there is no pressure to decide quickly.
Support for families
Grief over a pet is real grief. We send a sympathy card after every euthanasia and we are available by phone if you want to talk. For families that want additional support, the ASPCA Pet Loss hotline (1-877-474-3310) and the Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline (607-218-7457) are good national resources. The Lap of Love pet-loss-support library is also widely recommended. Children in particular often benefit from age-appropriate books like The Tenth Good Thing About Barney and The Invisible Leash. We can talk through the conversation with kids before the appointment if you would like.
Frequently asked questions
How will I know when it is time?
Look for a gradual shift in the balance of good days and bad days, loss of the things your pet most enjoyed, persistent pain that medication is no longer controlling, or loss of dignity in basic functions (eating, drinking, eliminating, getting up). None of these is a single trigger. We are happy to do a no-fee quality-of-life consult with you and give you our honest read.
Will my pet feel any pain?
No. The first injection is a heavy sedative that puts your pet into a deep, peaceful sleep within minutes. The final injection is given only after your pet is already unconscious. The process is gentle and the great majority of pets simply drift off as if falling asleep.
Can my whole family be there?
Yes. We use a private comfort room and welcome family members of any age, friends, and other family pets. There is no time limit and no script. You can stay through the entire process or step out at any point. We have had families spend an hour together before the appointment and others who want a quiet, simple goodbye. All approaches are right.
Do you offer in-home euthanasia?
Our team performs euthanasia at the hospital in our private comfort room. For families who prefer in-home services, we can refer you to a local provider that specializes in home euthanasia. They are skilled and compassionate and we are happy to coordinate.
What aftercare options do you offer?
Private cremation (your pet's individual ashes returned to you in a wooden urn or container of your choice), communal cremation (no ashes returned), and keepsakes including paw prints, fur clippings, and clay paw impressions. We will walk through every option with no pressure. There is no rush to decide on the day.
What does end-of-life care cost?
Quality-of-life consults are free. Euthanasia and aftercare pricing depends on your pet's weight, the cremation option you choose, and any keepsakes. We will give you a complete written estimate before the appointment so finances are not a worry on a hard day. Please call (928) 771-1340 for current pricing.
Is it normal to grieve this much?
Yes. The bond with a pet is a real, intense, daily relationship, and the grief that follows its end is real grief. There is no timeline that is "right." If you find yourself struggling for an extended time, the resources mentioned above (ASPCA and Cornell pet loss hotlines, the Lap of Love library) are well worth a call.
